2024 Sustainability Goals

I always set goals for myself every New Year (like the rest of the world), but they are always so vague ie. be more low waste, exercise more, and drink more water. This year though I decided to approach the year a little differently. For each vague goal, I create I will make an actual plan for the year and then for each month. This may seem like a lot of work but I want to make an effort to stick to my goals this year (another New Year’s goal). Impact-Site-Verification: 3cb5d2c0-2a74-4932-a76b-87932a41d18c

This is my 2024 master plan for my sustainability/low waste/plant-based/eco-friendly goals. In previous years I have done pretty ok in this department, but you have to practice what you preach right? I want to take it a step further and really commit to it. Each month I am going to have a concrete plan on how to achieve these goals and my progress on them. To view my 2024 goals click here!

  1. 80/20 Plant-based

I have always been on and off with vegetarianism and a pescatarian diet but could never really get it to stick. I want to take all the pressure off of being the perfect vegetarian and make small changes in my diet so that by the end of the year I am eating majority plant based. I found the perfect balance for me right now is 80 plant-based and 20 % not. So, for me, that looks like 2 out of the three meals of the day will ideally be plant based or at least contain no meat.

  1. Thrift

In accordance with the 5 Rs ( refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, rot), I am making it my goal this year to try and thrift certain clothes and household goods before buying new ones. There are certain goods that I would never buy thrifted like undergarments, socks, and shoes. I also want to cut back on the amount of buying or refuse the need to buy into trends that will only last 2 weeks.

  1. Reusables

I have a reusable water bottle, coffee mug, and tons of bags so there is no need for me to use disposals. I tend to forget them sometimes especially when going out for a quick errand. I plan to have a spot for my reusables to live that way I will never forget them again.

  1. Clothing Material

To help me cut back on the number of clothes I buy, both in-store and thrifting, I am going to start making sure the material of the clothing is ideally all natural materials (or at least 70%). All natural materials such as cotton, linen, and wool will eventually break down when the clothes are no longer usable – spandex not so much.

  1. Homemade

My last sustainability goal for this year is to make more food and other things at home. Learning to do these things at home not only is more eco-friendly but these skills are beyond valuable. Over the fall I learned how to do needlepoint, and over the coming months I am going to learn to crochet.

Each month I am going to create smaller goals from the bigger ones I outline above. See my general New years goals here!e
