January goals for 2024! I have some big goals for 2024 but I went to break them into bite-size pieces every month. What are your sustainable living goals?

🌱 I would love to start eating more plant-based this year. I will start gradually implementing more recipes and meals into my daily rotations until I am (almost) all plant-based

💰 No Buy January: honestly this one is not going to be that hard. I don't really impulse buy that much anyway. However, there is always that one thing that I know I don't need that ends up in my cart.

👗Moving back home after school I realized I have a lot of clothes. Stuff that should have been recycled long ago like old work shirts and clothes that haven't fit me since high school.

🙍‍♀️Community is so important when it comes to building resiliency.

📕Getting back into non-fiction reading this year. I ended a year reading tons of fiction books but I now have a lengthy list of non-fiction I need to start!

A little ThredUP haul!

I have made it my mission to only thrift as much of my clothing as I can from now on. Walking into clothing stores I am always overwhelmed by how much there is. Even when I walk into thrift stores I see how little people actually wear their clothes.

I am on a journey to build a wardrobe I will wear for a long time. Really taking the time to be intentional about my purchases and learn my preferences when it comes to clothing (I am never going to be a long skirt girl).

Here is some criteria I have while looking for clothes that help me from over-consuming:
👗 I look for clothing that has at least 70% natural fibers (cotton, modal, linen, wool etc…) I noticed i gravitated towards these prices in my closet.

👗I took the time to understand what colors and silhouettes I feel best in.

👗 I read books, watched documentaries, and listened to podcast about the fashion industry.

👗 learned the value of quality over quantity

A couple weeks ago I got to attend the Common Grou

A couple weeks ago I got to attend the Common Ground Fair put on by @mofga I go to learn a bunch of things from vermicomposting to herbalism to PFASs to the importance of land in a community.

It showed me how farms and food play a huge part in a community. How locally grown food can teach people so much about the land they live on, and how land is just as sacred as the family that lives on it. We can protect the land we live on and therefore our community by supporting local farms wherever you are—city, suburb, or rural. We can grow native flowers and gardens that will support biodiversity, we can stop using pesticides on our lawns. We can create community gardens to connect with one another. There is so much we can do that will help each other and the earth.

🌽 Cuts down on Food Miles - Food Miles is the distance your food takes to get from the harvesting location to your plate. When you buy local there is less fossil fuels being used to transport and distribute the food.

🌽 Preserves farm land - buying local keeps precious greenery in the area, especially in urban areas where green space is scarce. Preservation of land allows for native insects and animals to thrive.

Yesterday I went to a RedSox game and wanted to talk about how it’s okay to not be sustainable all the time. I had a lot of red meat, used a plastic water bottle, and just didn’t think about being the most sustainable I could be.

Sometimes when it come to day to day sustainability many people take it as a all or nothing approach. Either you live this perfect lifestyle or your not doing enough. This mindset doesn’t take into the account the nuances of life. It moves the focus away from doing what you can and instead focuses on what you can’t do, which overwhelms people into not doing anything at all. Small things that you can do everyday will make a bigger difference than not doing anything at all!

There are small things you can do each day for the earth. Not every action has to be big and spectacular. Today I composted my food scrapes and reduced food waste by shopping at Haymarket. I also just enjoyed the sun. Enjoying nature and being thankful for what it offers is probably the most important act you can do to be “eco friendly”, it allows you to connect to what you are fighting for.
